Are you struggling to help your child with standard subtraction? Don't worry, we've got you covered!

First, have your child write out the problem using the standard subtraction format (example: 8 - 3).

Next, have them line up the numbers on a number line, starting with the larger number.

Then, count back from the larger number to the smaller number and cross off each number as they go. The remaining number is the answer to the problem.

For example, in our previous example of 8-3, we would cross off 8 and then count back three numbers (7, 6, 5) before landing on our answer of 5.

Another helpful tip is to have them use objects or drawings to visually represent the problem and aid in their counting.
